ambrette
Grey-brown and kidney-shaped, the seeds of the musk mallow were prized for their musk long before synthetic musks existed, and they still flavour some liqueurs and bitters as well as scenting perfume. Their name was later borrowed for musk ambrette, a synthetic nitro musk that imitates the smell but shares none of the chemistry.
