costus
Costus root, from a tall herb of the Himalaya in the daisy family, gives an oil famous for smelling like an animal's coat, fatty, musky and hairy, with a woody, orris-like softness underneath. Long burned in Asian incense and once valued in perfumery for its animal warmth, natural costus has largely given way to reconstructions that keep its skin-like persistence.
