The first rain after a long spell without it releases geosmin from the ground, a molecule made by soil bacteria that the nose detects in vanishing traces, and the resulting petrichor is the wet-stone side of mineral notes. The other side is chalk dust, slate and the struck-flint smell that wine tasters call gunflint, and perfumers compose both with synthetics that bring coolness and a sense of hardness to a composition.
