The plum blossom of East Asian painting and poetry is Prunus mume, the ume, a tree closer to the apricot than to the European plum, and it blooms at the end of winter, often while snow still lies on the branches. Unlike most ornamental cherries it carries a real fragrance, clean, honeyed and softly fruity, sweet enough to be noticed in cold air.
